Former Olympic marathoner, Dale Warrander is back to defend his 2008 and 2007 half marathon titles at this year's adidas Auckland Marathon event. Warrander has an impressive record in Auckland, he is unbeaten in whichever event he has entered in the last six years with four half marathon and 2 full marathon wins.
Warrander says that he is looking forward to running the adidas Auckland Half marathon which doubles as the 2009 Athletics New Zealand Half Marathon Championships. "It is one of my favourite races on the racing calendar. I am looking to run around 65 minutes for Auckland if conditions are good" said Warrander.
The event has attracted a quality field with 2007 marathon winner, Matt Smith, Sam Wreford, Sam Dobson and Mark McKeown set to test Warrander's successful record at the event.
The elite female entries in the half marathon event are just as strong with previous winners Suzi Richards, Shireen Crumpton and Melissa Moon lining up against track specialist Nikki Hamblin, and the well performed pair of Maria Bentley and Lara Philips. They will also compete for the national half marathon title.
The half marathon starts at 6:45am at Devonport and finishes at Victoria Park in Auckland City.
New Zealand running legend, Rod Dixon will be a special guest at this year's adidas Auckland Marathon. Managing Director, Stephen Brown, said "Rod Dixon will start the KIDSMARATHON and be involved with a number of event activities at the event Expo and on event day. We are delighted to have someone of Rod's international standing at the event and in particular his passion for the KIDSMARATHON."
Dixon is a leading figure and passionate advocate of the worldwide children's health and fitness movement and has developed successful training and events for children in the USA.
He says "the goal of KIDSMARATHON events is to lay the foundation for a lifelong commitment to good health and fitness habits. We do this by educating kids about exercise and nutrition, empowering them to take their health into their own hands, and inspiring them with visits from running champions"
Rod Dixon enjoyed an outstanding athletic career winning Olympic and World Championships medals over track and cross country. He is a previous winner of the 1982 City of Auckland Marathon and is widely known for his famous 1983 New York Marathon win in a New Zealand record time of 2:08:59.
Dixon says he is looking forward to returning to Auckland and being involved with the adidas Auckland Marathon KIDSMARATHON.
