adidas become the naming sponsor of the Auckland Marathon, New Zealand's premier running event, in 2004. It has now committed to supporting the adidas Auckland Marathon until 2014.
"We're very proud to put our name to the adidas Auckland Marathon," says adidas' New Zealand country manager, David Huggett.
"It's a perfect fit for adidas as running is one of our key areas of focus globally, and we pride ourselves on setting the standard for the particular needs of the sport.
adidas Auckland Marathon managing director Stephen Brown says the Auckland Marathon, which dates back to 1992, has gone from strength to strength during adidas' period of sponsorship.
"adidas' sponsorship has enabled us to expand the marathon and take it to a truly global stage. This year's marathon field will be largest assembled in New Zealand for 17 years. The confidence of knowing that our valuable relationship with adidas will continue for the next three years will help us to plan ahead with certainty and continue to grow."
The adidas Auckland Marathon has become a full member of the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), the global body that fosters and promotes distance running throughout the world. AIMS works with the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) on all matters relating to international road races to exchange information, knowledge and expertise among members of the association. AIMS is an association of more than 300 race organisations located in over 90 countries.
Despite an increased field of 10,500 participants this year (an increase from 10,000 in 2010) as well as catering for a minimum number of at least 3000 Marathon participants, there was unprecedented demand for entries in both events since online entries opened on 8 April.
The 2011 adidas Auckland Half Marathon reached capacity in just 2 weeks this year and both the Marathon and Half Marathon events sold out in just 5 weeks and 4 days.

LA and Auckland have a close association in being Sister Cities. Approximately 35,000 visitors went through the venue over the two days. We aim to further develop our presence at LA Marathon over the next few years."

This year's adidas Auckland Marathon will see the introduction of a new innovative award for elite full marathon runners. The Top of the Bridge Prime awards recognise the first male and first female runners in the full marathon to cross the top of the Auckland Harbour Bridge. This is approximately 15km from the event start line at Devonport.
Managing Director, Stephen Brown, said, "We are always looking to be innovative in every area of the event. The Top of the Bridge Primes are the newest example of this and add a new dimension to the elite full marathon events."
Brown added "the top of the Auckland Harbour Bridge is defined as the official timing mats on the bridge for the purposes of the awards and that event officials will also be present at this point to adjudicate."
The two winning elite athletes will each receive a cash prize of $500 each. To be eligible for the prize the runners must complete the full marathon distance.
The event takes place on Sunday 31 October 2010.
